Relaxation vs Adventure Sometimes its hard to choose!

I always welcome summer with high expectations of quiet afternoons on the dock with a good book in hand, a quick dip in the lake to stretch my legs and the occasional visit by a neighbouring paddler. That is my Muskoka; quiet, lazy, serene.

But even though summer is a great time for rest and relaxation, it is also a time for adventure and excitement and all that can be found at the 122nd Annual MLA Aquatic Regatta and the MLA Sailing Regatta, both open to the public for a guest fee.

A long standing tradition, the MLA Aquatic Regatta marks the middle of the summer in Muskoka for a large number of MLA members and their guests. Some families have participated for generations and there are events for families to race together. There are races for canoes, skiffs, stand-up paddleboards, swimming, and a new junior race this year for kayaks. The day ends with the ever-exciting tilting competition, which involves a paddler and a jouster working together in a canoe to try to topple their competitor.

All participants are required to register and sign a waiver before entering a race and must bring their own canoes, kayaks and SUPs. (There will be two loaner canoes available for those who are unable to bring their own). A number of participants will be looking for partners for some of the races, so don’t be shy!

There will be a licensed beer garden open during the tilting event. Please note that for health and safety reasons, dogs are not allowed on the property of the Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club.

Join the fun on August 1st at the Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club, starting at 9:00 a.m. Call us at 705-765-5723 for event times and more information.

Sailing has its own faithful following; sailors and shoreline spectators love when the winds pick up and young and old tackle the elements. Whether you are a sailor, want to learn or just love to watch the excitement of sailing there are plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy the sport. This year local clubs are also offering TRY IT! days with demonstrations and a chance to try rowing or paddling for free. Check with your local club for a TRY IT! day near you!

Key events being held this summer include the MLA Muskoka Inter-Club Youth Sailing Regattas held on July 14th and 21st at eight Muskoka sailing schools, culminating in the MLA Muskoka Youth Sailing Championship where 48 athletes will compete for the coveted Aphrodite Cup on July 28th.  The annual MLA Sailing Regatta, open to all fleets, will be held at Beaumaris Yacht Club, Lake Muskoka, on August 2nd. The MLA Muskoka Laser Regatta and the Ontario Masters Laser Regatta will be held at the South Muskoka Sailing Club, Lake Muskoka, on August 15th and 16th.

Several of the sailing clubs in Muskoka host their own regattas and sailing schools continue to offer programs for young sailors between the ages of 7 and 16. For a full list of clubs, events and sailing programs, visit our website at www.mla.on.ca under Boating & Sailing – Muskoka Sailing Clubs or contact us at sailing@mla.on.ca.

The MLA is grateful to all its volunteers who help make these events happen. We are always looking for new volunteers to help, even if only for an hour during an event. Please consider offering your time by visiting our office at 65 Joseph Street in Port Carling, or calling us at 705-765-5723. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully this summer, we’ll see you in or on the water!
