The Muskoka Lakes Association (MLA) and the District Municipality of Muskoka (Muskoka) are pleased to announce that they have reached agreement on extended operation hours for the small lock at Port Carling for the summer of 2010.
Earlier this year, the Muskoka District Council approved new operating hours that have increased the availability of the large lock and discontinued the practice of making the small lock available for unsupervised overnight operation. The MLA has welcomed the improved service at the large lock, but has been concerned about the loss of overnight service at the small lock.
With financial assistance from the MLA, the municipality has improved security at the small lock and has agreed to make the lock available overnight during the months of July and August, on a trial basis, before deciding on operation hours for the period after Labour Day. For the trial period, the small lock will be available on a self-operated basis during those hours that the large lock is not available. The small lock will also be open and operated by municipal staff daily from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm until Labour Day. Further details may be obtained fromt the District Municipality of Muskoka ( www.muskoka.on.ca ) or by calling (705) 645-6764.
MLA President Brian McElwain and District Chair Gord Adams were both pleased that the discussions regarding this matter had been marked by a keen appreciation of the concerns of MLA members and of the municipality as a whole. They both expressed satisfaction with the results and look forward to continuing the productive working relationship between the MLA and Muskoka in the future.
