at Lakehead University’s Orillia campus

Muskoka, ON – June 16, 2014 – The Muskoka Lakes Association today announced it has awarded the 2014 MLA Bursary to Bradie Debes of Gravenhurst High School.

Bradie has been involved in many aspects of school life and been awarded numerous athletic awards at Gravenhurst High School.  She is an associate member of the Gravenhurst Environmental Advisory Committee and actively participates in their meetings.  Bradie also supports the Snowcrest Snowmobile Club, Morrison Lake Regatta and Muskoka Wharf Pond Hockey Tournament in her spare time.

Bradie has accepted admission to the environmental sustainability co-op program at Lakehead University’s Orillia campus.  She begins pursuing her degree this fall.

The $5,000 MLA Bursary is awarded each year to a student entering post-secondary education from Bracebridge-Muskoka Lakes Secondary School, Gravenhurst High School or St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School.

“The MLA Bursary is all about giving back to deserving students our community,” said Mike Langdon, president, Muskoka Lakes Association. “We were overwhelmingly impressed with Bradie’s academic and extracurricular achievements, and wish her the best as she begins her post-secondary education at Lakehead University.”

Following completion of her first year of post-secondary education, the MLA will offer Bradie the option to accept employment with the MLA during the summer of 2015, assisting with the association’s water quality initiative.  The summer work term aims to provide students meaningful work experience in their chosen field of study, while also helping to fund their second year of post-secondary education.

The MLA Bursary will be available to a student graduating from Bracebridge-Muskoka Lakes Secondary School, Gravenhurst High School or St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School, in 2015. The application process begins in March.  Students should speak to their guidance counselors for more information.
