The MLA has a passionate and dedicated past-president. Brian McElwain is devoted to Muskoka and led the MLA board accordingly. One of his key projects continues to be the promotion of the MLA Advantage Card.
Now in its third year, the MLA Advantage Card program, available exclusively to MLA members, has grown significantly, with over 100 participating retailers, restaurants and service providers.
The MLA established the Advantage Card program, not only to provide value to our members, but also to encourage greater interaction between MLA members and Muskoka merchants. Much of the local economy is driven by tourism and seasonal residents. In addition to our many activities to protect the Muskoka environment, we strongly encourage our members to ‘Stock up in Muskoka’, and support local businesses.
Every spring, since 2010, Brian has pounded the pavement, soliciting local retailers, restaurants and service providers to participate in our program by honouring our members with special offers and discounts upon presentation of their Advantage Card. The program has been a resounding success.
Several business owners have expressed their appreciation of our effort. At Bridgeport in Port Carling, Jenna and Jude report that MLA members have commented that they were attracted to the Advantage Card collateral displayed on her shop window and curiosity prompted their visit. Jen, from the Fairways at Kirrie Glen, is pleased to see MLA members returning again and again to play a discounted round of golf. Other vendors like Lindsay who owns Little Black Bow in Bracebridge, enjoy a steady stream of repeat business from Advantage Card holders.
And members love the deals. Peter Woods stays at his cottage all summer and uses his card frequently to golf, dine out and even shop at the local bakery. Jane Evans carries her card at all times and religiously seeks out the Advantage Card welcome sign at businesses and restaurants in Muskoka. Last year she claims that she more than paid for her MLA membership.
We have a plethora of diverse and unique products and services in Muskoka and by honouring the MLA Advantage Card, businesses are gaining greater exposure and members are become more committed to “Stocking Up in Muskoka”! It’s a win for everyone!
There are still a few weeks of summer left and the fall in Muskoka is magical. Keep your card handy.
