MLA Hosts Top Ontario Sailors at the Muskoka Laser Regatta
On August 17th and 18th, 2013, the Muskoka Lakes Association and its sailing network member, South Muskoka Sailing Club, welcomed avid sailboat racers to its annual Laser Regatta. In addition to more than a dozen local Muskoka sailors, the event included accomplished competitors from southern Ontario.
The group enjoyed brilliant sunshine and warm temperatures; however, were challenged with the lack of wind. On both Saturday and Sunday the sailors bobbed on Lake Muskoka for many hours waiting for breeze to fill in. The South Muskoka Sailing Club (SMSC) race committee of Liam Roberts and Ryan Lind were able to run four races over the weekend. The large fleet and small course made for very close competition with positions being contested right until the finish line.
Nigel Heath, one of Canada’s top Laser sailors from Toronto’s Water Rats Sailing Club (WRSC), was dominant winning three of the four races. MLA Vice President, Michael Hart finished second overall edging out Tobin Young, another WRSC racer who is fresh off his third place at the Canadian Laser Master Championships. Tobin’s wife Pamela Shinkoda was recognized as the top female and Stephen Duncan as the top junior.
In the Women's scoring, Pamela Shinkoda had a strong lead on the other racers. Elizabeth Lee, WRSC, took the silver metal and Terry Duncan from Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club won the bronze.
The group enjoyed swamping sailing stories at an après sail barbeque at Andrea and Steve Phillips’ cottage. Special appreciation in supporting the regatta included our junior helpers, Rachael and Sarah Phillips, and our teenage boat taxi drivers, Matthew Phillips and Alex Loe. Thanks
again goes out to our MLA Muskoka Sailing Network sponsors Fogh Marine, Robertson & Robertson Skipper’s Plan Insurance, Posterjack.ca and Ontario Sailing for their support and contributions to the awards.
